Learn to discern the truth. It may not be as easy as it seems. When you hear only one side of the story is it the truth? It might be or it might not be but I can assure you of one thing. It will be biased. All of us have our own opinions on all things and all that we share will be slanted in that direction. Even if we do not share a falsehood we may lean in a direction that promotes our own agenda and others will as well. Deliberately work on ways to discern the truth. Prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit might be a good place to start.

Make yourself accept the truth. If someone you believe in or trust tells you something does that automatically make it the truth? Or if someone you don’t trust tells you something does that make it not the truth. I believe that we must have people in our lives that we trust and that means until proven differently. One might even consider it this way as well. We need people in our lives that trust us and are willing to fight for us even if the possibility exists that we that we are in the wrong. Jesus did. He said father forgive them for they know not what they do. However that doesn’t change the fact that the truth is not established by the person who tells you something. The truth is the truth because it is the truth. Once the truth is established you must make yourself accept it regardless of what or who told you.

Once you have discerned the truth and come to a place to accept the truth you must discipline yourself to act on the truth. We don’t want to hear sometimes that we are wrong but that may be the truth. It may be difficult to accept but we must. Even harder is the assuming the position of acting on the truth. We are told that if we mess up we are to repent and if we wrong a brother we are to apologize and ask for forgiveness. To do that means to put ourselves in a vulnerable position. We run the risk of losing. That is why some can’t put themselves in the position of being disciplined. The outcome is potentially tragic. Is anything worth losing or missing out on salvation?

What we have described here in the simplest form is the steps of salvation. We learn the truth of the word. We accept the work of Christ. Then we submit ourselves to Him. Miss any of those steps and you are not in. It’s that simple.

Distinguishing the difference between God’s plan and His will imperative if we are going to be able to overcome some of the issues that we will face in this life. We struggle with things not going the way we think they ought go and assume it is the enemy against us. That is often followed by anger, disappointment, discouragement, and frustration that could be avoided if we understand and accept that God is in control of what He has promised and is well able to work things out for us. We must accept that God is for us and not against us and that He has a planned end of fulfillment for us.

In my new book “Here’s the Man” I address this very subject. I am very excited this particular work. In this book we take a look a the life of Joseph and how God worked out His plan from the time of the dream til the time of fulfillment. The issues and character attributes discussed in this book has the potential to transform lives.  The book should be available around Christmas.

Below are words from a review of the book by a fellow author:

“No one wants to be viewed as a failure.  You were created to dream and given gifts to make that dream happen.  As God declares His will for our lives we begin to make a plan to achieve or reach for that will.  However, unplanned disruptions seem to build roadblocks to that destiny or the fulfillment of our dream. Are they roadblocks? Are these disruptions keeping us from God’s will? We begin to question have we really heard from God?  Did we miss something in what I thought was God’s plan for me?

In this book about Joseph, you will find principles that can help you to understand how God, the Father moves from declaring His will to taking us unto the plan of fulfilling that will.  The important insights and illumination in this book from God’s Word can alter our mindset, keep us from fighting the plan God has for us, and alter the circumstances of your life and bring a change that will positively impact you and your family.  You will be challenged and changed as you see how God finally declares to Egypt and the world “HERE’S THE MAN”!”

Hopeless? Is it the End!!

October 27, 2011

Maintaining a balanced life in the face of adversity can be difficult. God’s plan and our expectation seem to collide into an unexplainable series of events that leave us hopeless. What seems like the end often times is not really the end. Job probably didn’t envision reclaiming his losses. In the end Job was blessed with double what he had before.  The truth is it just seemed like the end.

Joseph probably was not planning tomorrow’s meals.  What could have been the end was not the end.  God intervened again.  The brothers sold him to a band of gypsies.  The brothers without Rueben reasoned among themselves that this way they would get something out of the deal and his blood would not be on their hands seeing he was family.  It’s really interesting the way people think.  People haven’t changed much in three thousand years. They still don’t have the last word.

The truth is God hasn’t changed much either.  As a matter of fact the Word says he hasn’t changed at all.  He is the same yesterday, today and forever.  That means we don’t have to worry about his promises not being fulfilled.  He will do what He says He will do.  He will finish what He starts.  So where does that leave us.

We may not be able to see how our expectations fit in God’s purpose however if we will remain faithful and accept His plan and where ever that takes us we will be took care of. He is well able to deliver and protect. God and God alone is in control. His plan is for good and not for evil. Accept His plan. It’s not the end.

Influence is one of the most important attributes we can possess. It is the means by which we affect the people and world around us. Our influence is manifest both positive and negative so we must really be careful how we use it.

Most everyone by now has heard the statement that leadership is influence. That is a very powerful statement. Because of the potential impact we possess we need to consider very diligently the direction we are going and what it will do for others. We must be grounded or settled in what we believe.  What we believe is going to determine which direction we are going to go, how we plan on getting there, and who we plan on taking with us. Once we are settled on what we believe the follow up is easier. As we begin to move others begin to buy in and follow. One of the cool things is the ones who are following often help to define the specific direction and mode of transportation for reaching the goal. It is called leadership but it is based on influence.

The word of God says that two is better than one. If one be overtaken there is protection with a second. If one gets cold there is warmth with a second suggesting comfort from obstacles. He declares that there is safety and direction in a counsel of multitudes. Influence is one way to describe it but it all starts with relationship. A healthy relationship opens the door and allows the presentation of opportunity to assert influence.

Use your attributes such as being responsible, living a balanced life, knowing your purpose, being a person of integrity, and being a person of faith to positively influence the lives of others.

What A Man

We all wonder at times why things are happening the way they are happening. There are times we question if God is really on our side. We all believe that if we had more we could do more and if things didn’t come against us at the most inopportune time we could accomplish more. We will not have a lot of control over when and where circumstances seem to obstruct our path. We could and would possibly do more if we had more and there is no right or opportune time for opposition. Realistically the time is always now and that is when things happen. Just be assured of this. God is now and always on your side.

As we search the scriptures we find that all men of God have had to face and endure their share of misfortune or opposition. Some men have even been taken from this life before receiving the promise yet it didn’t detour them. God promised He would never leave us nor forsake us and His word goes on to say that all things work together for good to them who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Each step of a righteous man is ordered of God. It is important for us to understand that God will tell us each step to be taken. It is equally important to accept that God uses each of those steps to confirm His leading us to that place of righteousness in Him. May we discover how to follow God in such a manner that we can hear Him say “well done.”

Living a balanced stable life in Christ is constantly being challenged. Not thinking too highly of ourselves when things go right and staying constant when things go wrong are issues we will have to deal with in this life. The ability to remain focused on forward progress is difficult at times. Work on a constant daily devotion time where time is spent not just reading the word but time is spent listening and responding to God and documenting what is being communicated. Purpose will be established and the direction to fulfill it will be communicated. We are responsible for making the right choices and ultimately for the choice of our spiritual maturity or growth.

One of the biggest challenges I have faced in living a consistent, balanced life for Christ is being able to accept the challenges that continue to come my way. For some reason, that has been one of the hardest things for me to conquer and learn how to accept in this life. I know that life is a marathon and not a sprint. I just can’t seem to grasp at times the correlation between continued challenge and progress. I will consider that I am not the only one.

Let’s consider it this way. Monday is for a lot of people the most hated day of the week. It is the day traditionally that the new work week begins. It just happens to fall the day after the day we have celebrated the accomplishments of the previous week or been involved in something we enjoyed or in some cases it represents the return to situations, relationships, and circumstances that are uncomfortable. Monday has become for some a day of challenge. No matter how much we accomplished last week we must start all over to try to accomplish more. If we did not meet the expectations last week that makes this week’s demands even more demanding. The challenges of life are not only confined to the work place. Our homes, marriages, children, extended family, church, friends, possessions, the poor, other charitable organizations all scream for more attention. The challenges can be overwhelming.

Let me start by suggesting that we learn how to call a quick time out each day to spend some time with God. Try the two-minute tie-in that simply means take a couple of minutes and read a scripture and let God speak and talk back to Him. Listen to what He is saying and if you think He is not saying anything profound that is okay. Just know that He is. The word says that those who come to Him must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

We all want to see progress. We all can learn how to live a balanced life. We must learn how to spend appropriate time with God.

That means learning how to call time out and take control of our life by allowing God to have control.

Have you given your all

October 15, 2011

Give your all. We know it is important to live a balanced life. We know it is important to be faithful. We know it is important to be devoted to consistent bible study. We even talk about commitment but what about giving our all.

This morning while walking I was thinking about some of the situations that life had seem to direct my way and how I was going to handle them. My thoughts took me to drawing a line and setting a date and saying this is as far as I am going. Immediately that thought was challenged in my mind by the question of whether that thought was right. If I have told God that I would go wherever He wants me to go and that I would do whatever He wanted me to do, is it a contradiction to say this is as far as I am willing to go? I am challenged. At this point in my life I didn’t expect to be placed in this situation. I expected the steps of a righteous man being ordained of God meant all things falling into place.

I can’t answer for others but I don’t want to miss God. My expectation of what life would be has been much different than what I thought. The direction God has chosen for me has been difficult at times. I am encouraged however that through all the life changes God has been faithful. In the end we will discover that it is about fulfilling His purpose.

We can succeed. We can overcome. It will be worth it. God will come through for us.

Man_Up and be the man God wants you to be.

We all have thought about going to special places and doing special things. We need God’s favor.

Why spend time reading or taking time for our daily devotion. Why work on being faithful. Why the discipline of holiness or faith. Why make the right choices of bible study and allow expectations of God working on our behalf to influence our lives. Why place ourselves under the leadership of others only at times to be taken advantage of. Because of the “Favor of God.”

We don’t need to discount hard work, skills or abilities.  However without the favor of God the success is not the same.  It is even more exciting when others recognize it.  When they really get it they don’t want to hold anything back.  Potiphar recognized the favor of Jehovah.  Some versions just say that Potiphar grew fond of Joseph and turned over all his belongings to his care. It was more than that. From that point God blessed all of Potiphars house. Everything that was done both in the house and in the field was blessed. Potiphar came to trust him so much that it is declared that Potiphar only concerned himself with eating his meals.  Everything else concerning his household was turned over to Joseph.  In case there is any doubt that God was in control let’s consider what we know about Joseph before this time.  We don’t see anything that would suggest that he possessed any extraordinary management skills before now.  What we have seen is the youngest son in an atmosphere of sheltering and extreme jealousy.  He was the favorite and quite likely didn’t have to perform like the rest.  What we are seeing now is absolutely phenomenal.  There should be no doubt that what is being manifest is God’s blessing and favor.

I have to believe God will do the same for us.  I believe God is honestly looking for ways to do so.  But it wouldn’t have happened without Joseph doing his best either.  So let’s keep things in proper perspective.  God is looking for those to bless.  We must walk forward doing good deliberately.  Doing what is right purposefully and making the best of every situation.

Be encouraged. Fulfill God’ purpose for you. Look forward to your future. Keep things balanced.

Man_Up and be the man God wants you to be.

Are you full of encouragement today? I hope you are. However there is a chance that you are not. I am not trying to suggest anything except that we for some reason are not overly full of joy or encouragement all the time. Some days are just not fun. Some days I have to look pretty hard for something to be happy or encouraged about. Some have that experience more than others.

As believers we believe and accept that the joy of the Lord is our strength. That indicates that the hope that drives us is our faith and belief in Christ Jesus. There are some basic things we accept that keep us going. Jesus said we were more than servants and that we were friends. God indicates that He will not leave us nor forsake us. The word declares to ask, seek, and knock so we can receive, find, and have doors opened before us. For our future we are told that if He went away to build a place for us, He would also return to receive us unto Himself.

The truth of the matter is that some do not know that hope. The world does not know that hope. Those outside of Christ have not that hope. The man let down through the roof to Christ came from a background of teaching that his condition was an indication of his future. He had no hope. When Jesus said your sins are forgiven it was a statement to give hope. For once in his life now he had a reason to live.

The purpose of the relationships we are involved in is give hope. It is through the influence we offer into the lives of others that God instills hope in them. It is imperative that we be intentionally involved in the lives of others to declare there is a reason to live for Christ. Jesus still saves. Jesus still forgives. Jesus still heals. Jesus still gives life and the world needs to know it. How we give ourselves to be encouragement in the lives of others will determine our success, growth, and the fulfillment of purpose in this life.

The challenge of the day

October 11, 2011

There is time in each of our lives that we need to be ready to step to the next level. The waves of life can be challenging. There are a number of challenges that we face in this life. Some of them are hard and some are down right devastating to say the least. How we handle or deal with the difficulties in life as well as the successes is important. Both have the potential to hold us back. That statement may come as a surprise but it is true.

We recognize that Ezekiel sees the glory of God and is successful in obeying God in the work that He has for him. What is often overlooked is the fact that he had to be forcefully removed from the presence of God and was angry for the removal. Ezekiel chapter three and verse fourteen says “The Spirit then lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the LORD on me.” He liked what he saw and enjoyed what God was doing in his life. He was learning and felt as though he was growing and in the center of God’s will and he was right except when it was time to go it was time to go. It is the same for us.

The temptation to not move during times of difficulties is just as real. Nothing affects our lives like discouragement. It will make you complacent because you get tired of asking for relief. It will make you angry because you will entertain that God has lied to you and left you. It is possible to be so afraid of failing that we are afraid to move. It is real and regardless of how strong we think we are we are vulnerable. Job may have said “even though God slay me I’ll still praise Him”, however he came to a place that he cursed the day he was born and we are not exempt. Thank God we serve a real live God that does care.

The temptation is to be scared or content and not move. The challenge is to be in tune with the voice of God and sensitive to His Spirit and willing to move as God directs. Trust is an issue that must be addressed. Encouragement is a key ingredient that must be found. Daily devotions will be discovered as beneficial to find direction. God’s purpose can  be discovered.

Accept the challenge.
