Here's the Man Book Cover

Man_Up and do what is right

Today is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad. How many times have we heard that said or even said it ourselves? It may seem simple but it is but it may prove to be astoundingly important. Today is the only day we have to apply what we would change about yesterday to influence the potential of tomorrow.

We could and should all say that we want to be what God wants for us to be. I think that is a reasonable expectation as well as a realistic desire. However, what does that mean? Does it mean to endure? Does it mean to stay engaged? Could it mean to be faithful in the now? To Man_Up is to willingly place ourselves in the hands of God and allow Him to work in us His will by allowing the processes of reality to develop us to be what God wants for us to be. There will be both reward and consequences for the decisions and choices we make. Life will not be fair. There will be things that will seem unwarranted and undeserved. They will all share in molding us to be what God wants for us to be if we will stay committed to Him.

There will be two areas of temptation with intention to confuse us. One will be the temptation to consider the past. Although remembering some things of the past is reasonable, we must not continually dwell on the past. It is a trap. We cannot go backward. It won’t work. It never has been and it never will be a reasonable option for success. Just don’t go there. The other is the temptation to be infatuated with the future. Just as we can’t dwell continually on the past we cannot be consumed with the future. We do need to know we are going forward. We do need to have a vision. However, if all we look at is the future we will be continually disappointed. Tomorrow never comes and yesterday never returns.

We have to find a way to be content today. Today is when God is working on us. Today is when God heals. Today is when God saves. Today is when God delivers. Today is where we need to work out how to live. Today is when we must accept the call to Man_Up.

Here’s the Man

The hardest thing about life especially after salvation is being okay with all the junk that just seems to come our way from time to time. We cover ourselves up with promises and feel good words and pats on the back and that is okay but until we just seem to come to a place of being okay with it we’ve not arrived yet. Try this on. Some of the stuff we go through is because God wants us to. It’s not because we asked for it. It is not because we deserved it. It is not because we are being punished. It is because God wants us to. When we get upset because we don’t understand,  and it hurts, and we’ve never been treated this way it would be a whole lot easier to go through by accepting that it is just what God wants at this time. Remember this. Them that He foreknew He also predestined. That doesn’t mean we are puppets. That means He has already gone before us and prepared the way. Once we accept that it will be a lot easier. He hasn’t left us. He is ahead of us.

God’s plan for us is good not evil. His plan is for prosperity not for ruin. He has prepared a hope and a future.

Here’s the Man

January 16, 2012

I am very excited about my new book – “Here’s the Man”

These are words from my pastor as he helped me with the foreword.

In reading this book I was reminded of the scripture in Jeremiah 29:11… “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” God truly has orchestrated and ordained a plan and a divine purpose for each of us. In Joseph’s life, as mentioned in this book, the plan seemed to be a maze of disappointments, frustrations, and severe challenges yet at the end of the day God worked His plan and saved a nation. What caught my attention is the fact that God is more in control than we may be aware of. He is positioning and directing our steps every day. As the book clearly states, our greatest challenge is to have the resolve to “stay the course.” I want so much to be the man that God can count on to cross the finish line with my job complete.

I had a very interesting discussion earlier this week concerning two contrasting styles of leadership. The authoritative person is representative of delegating style of leadership and the authoritarian is representative of a dictator. Both have their strengths in given circumstances however that is not what intrigued me about the conversation.

How do you view yourself? What kind of a leader are you? I’m not talking about abilities. When you look at yourself in the mirror and honestly assess what kind of a leader you are, what do you see? Do you see someone who is able to incorporate others into the task and allow them to produce or do you exhibit control by manipulation and micromanaging each situation. If you find the soliciting of help lightens your load you are probably an authoritative leader. If the presence of help causes more stress than relief then you are either an authoritarian dealing with some internal issues or you have the wrong help. There is no other way to explain it. Most people are afraid to honestly assess and honestly admit the truth about themselves because of the personal issues they don’t like about themselves. The personal issues become personnel issues.

Perhaps an even more intriguing question would be this. What is your view of God? Do you see God as authoritative or authoritarian? Do you see Him as one who asks you to do something then allows you to pursue it or as one who tells you every step to take and if you don’t do it absolutely flawless you will be beaten with a big stick? I am not sure we know how to take God sometimes but it may be more important than we think. When we settle the question of whether God is for us and trusts us and believes in us it is easier to function. If we walk around scared because we are expecting to get beat down because we don’t pass inspection makes life unbearable. How you view God is crucial.

So what is it for you? How do you see God? Do you need to change either?

We all have thought about going to special places and doing special things. We need God’s favor.

Why spend time reading or taking time for our daily devotion. Why work on being faithful. Why the discipline of holiness or faith. Why make the right choices of bible study and allow expectations of God working on our behalf to influence our lives. Why place ourselves under the leadership of others only at times to be taken advantage of. Because of the “Favor of God.”

We don’t need to discount hard work, skills or abilities.  However without the favor of God the success is not the same.  It is even more exciting when others recognize it.  When they really get it they don’t want to hold anything back.  Potiphar recognized the favor of Jehovah.  Some versions just say that Potiphar grew fond of Joseph and turned over all his belongings to his care. It was more than that. From that point God blessed all of Potiphars house. Everything that was done both in the house and in the field was blessed. Potiphar came to trust him so much that it is declared that Potiphar only concerned himself with eating his meals.  Everything else concerning his household was turned over to Joseph.  In case there is any doubt that God was in control let’s consider what we know about Joseph before this time.  We don’t see anything that would suggest that he possessed any extraordinary management skills before now.  What we have seen is the youngest son in an atmosphere of sheltering and extreme jealousy.  He was the favorite and quite likely didn’t have to perform like the rest.  What we are seeing now is absolutely phenomenal.  There should be no doubt that what is being manifest is God’s blessing and favor.

I have to believe God will do the same for us.  I believe God is honestly looking for ways to do so.  But it wouldn’t have happened without Joseph doing his best either.  So let’s keep things in proper perspective.  God is looking for those to bless.  We must walk forward doing good deliberately.  Doing what is right purposefully and making the best of every situation.

Be encouraged. Fulfill God’ purpose for you. Look forward to your future. Keep things balanced.

There comes a point in every man’s life that he must accept his place in God’s plan for his life. After a lifetime of watching and observing others in that step it is still mind boggling considering the different responses people choose. Some walk through calmly like it is no big deal while others struggle with every decision. Yes, I said decision. It is a sovereign decision.

One of the toughest things for me originally was this particular step of accepting God’s plan for my life. After I was saved there was a time that I knew God wanted more from me. I prayed and took advantage of opportunities of ministry as they came available. As time went on direction of specific calling became clear. I knew that not only was I called to preach, I was called to pastor. I understood there was a specific calling on my life. What I didn’t understand was that I was only partially in control of fulfilling it.

We will probably determine that knowing God’s will and accepting God’s plan are two separate issues. We may be able to see the direction. We can certainly sense urgency. The Holy Spirit’s job is to draw us close and direct our steps. However we probably don’t know the specifics of the timing. Our reply to the urgency and sensitivity to the drawing of the spirit is going to be extremely important during this time. God knows His plans for us. He is for us.

Content or not content?

March 25, 2011

Man_Up

How often do you look at the man looking back at you in the mirror and say “what a man” and mean it positively. It is a fact that many people do not like the person they see looking back at them. Guilt and disappointment play a big role in how we approach the rest of life. Somehow we must find a way to accept ourselves, come to grips with whom we are, allow God to change us, and be content with those changes. Our past is to be overcome and our future is to be pursued.

Paul said he learned to be content in whatever state he was in. That can only be done as we accept who we are and what God is doing in our lives. Paul also said he was able to accomplish all things through Christ. Part of that is accepting that Christ is the answer and part of that is accepting that past failure does not dictate future progress. We all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We all have failed. We all have not done as good as we might have expected at times. We have a tendency to hold the guy in the mirror responsible.

Balance in our lives appears to be illusive at times. We know challenge makes us better however we know also that we need encouragement. In particular we need the encouragement of success. In leadership we are taught to take time to encourage those who work with and for us. We are taught to take specific time to point out successes that promote encouragement. Maybe we should take a little time for ourselves. Not promoting arrogance but promoting hope, happiness, and success so that we might be able to look in the mirror and say “WHAT A MAN.”

If God is with us…

January 21, 2011

Man_Up
It seems at times we must make ourselves accept the truth. One of those truths is that God is for us. God is on our side. It may be hard to see and feel at times but it is the truth. Now if we can let us push ourselves beyond the point of just telling ourselves to accept and allow ourselves to believe that God is on our side. It may be a stretch for some but it is imperative in order to step forward.

It is an incredible thing to know that God is with you and for you. Be still and know that I am God is the way He put it. It is an awesome thing to walk in His anointing. It’s the anointing that breaks the yoke is the way He stated it. There is a place in God we can walk when the circumstances of life just seem to part like the Red Sea and we walk across on dry ground. There is nothing that will ever take the place of being able to walk forward knowing that if God be for you there is nothing that can stop you. He noted it that if God be for you, who can be against you. There is a place that we know we can accomplish all things through Christ. In that place there is not much that can detour us. What a way to live. Knowing that God is with you and in you and for you is a great place to be.

Now go be the person God wants for you to be. Take the step of faith you have been contemplating. You know God’s voice. Trust and believe in His caring for you. What if He doesn’t provide? What if He doesn’t show up? What if He doesn’t …? I suppose it is a possibility. Did He say He would? What if …?

Growing up I remember going to church. I can’t tell you that I remember a lot of specifics about churches we attended but I do remember attending. At the age of eight or nine a Sunday school teacher that left an impression on me. I don’t know why I remember this but I recall his faithfulness in tithing. Every week I would witness him putting his tithe check in the offering. Maybe later on that is why tithing was not an issue in my life. I just knew that’s what I was supposed to do. I remember he would load us boys up and take us places for extra activities. There might not be a whole lot of spirituality in putt putt golf or then again we may need to rethink our position on spirituality.

There is much more to spirituality than praise and worship or reading the word. Please do not misunderstand. I am not saying that praise and worship or reading the word is not important. They are first, however they are not all it takes to be what God wants for us to be. We must be involved in the lives of others in order to have the impact necessary to change their lives. Actually that is how God’s holiness is revealed to them. Intentionally do what is right before others and purpose to be involved in the lives of others. It may surprise you how much influence you have.
